Location: Accrington
Construction Value: £6.8 million

The development of the new Coppice Centre at Accrington & Rossendale College in Lancashire encompassed the refurbishment of an existing building and the creation of 2,175 sq m of new build space. Incorporating a new performance theatre, refectory, dance & TV studios, media edit suite, music IT suite, general teaching accommodation, meeting areas, student lounge and hair and beauty salons, the scheme is located on a steeply sloping site within a mature woodland setting.

Designed by DLA Architecture, the new building has been developed through an extensive consultation process with both the client and external stakeholders. Rigorous analysis and review of the existing campus has taken place and key site issues and constraints addressed in the development of the new building on site.

Key to the success of the scheme was the consideration of a number of factors such as the retention of existing buildings, site topography and context, planning requirements and client aspirations. The multi-faceted nature of the scheme required a thorough design approach, and innovation and creativity was essential to ensure the viability of any proposed development.
