The scheme responds to the governments drive to encourage new forms of supported care units within the Supporting People Programme, helping older people and other vulnerable adults maintain their independence. The development will comprise a diverse range of 220 no. mixed tenure Extra Care apartments, houses and bungalows. Residents will have access to meals, domestic help, leisure and recreation facilities, personal care where necessary and 24/7 security to create a genuinely safe environment. The model aims at providing socially supportive, stimulating environments in which residents can live wholly independently whilst having the knowledge that 24-hour support services are available when needed. The design encourages a sense of place, reinforced by taking particular care with the orientation and 'clustering' of the buildings and respect of the existing topography and character of the site.
