Client: Ardagh Glass limited
Location: Monk Bretton, Barnsley

Ardagh Glass Limited is the UK's market leader in the design and manufacture of glass containers for the food and beverage markets. Their 71 acre manufacturing site at Monk Bretton, Barnsley currently produces up to 20 million glass containers per week operating 24 hours per day 7 days per week. With such a demanding schedule it is essential production and storage facilities on the site are maintained and replaced to a high standard.

Ardagh have identified a requirement for rationalisation of their warehouse facilities for storing manufactured products prior to dispatch, which involves the removal of outdated inefficient facilities. The proposal is to construct new warehouse facilities in closer proximity to existing manufacturing facilities and proposed highway links.

Large quantities of incoming raw materials and manufactured products are distributed to manufacturing and storage areas around the site by a constant stream of large commercial vehicles in a "one way" circulation system. Following the demolition of redundant warehouses and rationalisation of internal vehicular circulation to the north of the site, two sites have been identified for new warehouse development.

Site 1 will allow the construction of a new freestanding warehouse facility of 155,270 fs. (14,425 ms.) with associated service yard areas. Site 2 will allow the extension of 75,186 fs. (6985 ms.) to the recently constructed Anderson warehouse following the rationalization of the existing reclaimed glass and waste reclamation/storage areas.

The proposed demolition and construction activities will be carefully managed and phased to minimise disruption to the on-going production process, on site vehicular circulation, services distribution and drainage systems.
