DLA Design have recently handed over a 72463 sq m (780,000 sq ft) Regional Distribution Centre (RDC) in Bridgwater, Somerset, to Wm Morrison Logistics Operations.
The RDC which was delivered in a fast track 50 week programme occupies a strategic position in the South West of England directly adjacent to the M5 Motorway, which when at full capacity will supply over 65 stores.
Reflective of Morrison's business wide objective to reduce its carbon footprint, the design of the development has received BREEAM Excellent rating, the completed building is expected to achieve BREEAM Excellent rating for construction in early 2012. The 'Excellent' rating will be achieved through the use of photovoltaics, intelligent internal and external LED lighting systems, rainwater harvesting solar thermal heating, air source heat pumps, waste heat reclamation and on-site waste recycling.
The design of the RDC was inspired by the Willow Man, which is located immediately to the South of the proposal. The aim was to create a landmark building for Bridgwater, whilst maintaining a synergy with its semi-rural location. This was achieved through the use of a natural palette of willow colours.
This scheme strengthens DLA's 30 year relationship with Morrisons which has seen the successful delivery of several superstores and distribution centres across the UK.
