The mixed use Grove development comprises a 38,000 supermarket, 86-bed hotel and 71 residential units. Located in the centre of Eltham, the development aspires to be the most sustainable in the area - achieving Level 3 of the Code for Sustainable Homes with 20% of energy provided from renewable sources.

 

This landmark project, which replaces an existing unsuccessful shopping centre, was granted planning permission as the inspector considered the proposal to be a 'high quality design...which relates well to its urban context, promoting local distinctiveness through a site-specific design solution'.

 

The external design concept is inspired by the London Plane tree which thrives in urban environments and improves air quality by trapping pollutants in its bark. This subsequently gives the tree its distinctive dappled appearance, which has inspired the selection of natural colours and distinctive cladding for the external facade.
