The project provides a new multi-use workshop and studio spaces to the rear of the Hackney Empire site, designed to enable the theatre to develop community and youth theatre events as well as its flagship artist development programme. In addition the project includes 22 new apartments provided at upper level along with three new mews houses.
The scheme is the result of three years work with Hackney Empire, during which DLA produced design options and assisted in identifying a development partner. The development will be a great boost to the area, providing the local community with a brand new resource while making a significant contribution to the theatre's financial position. Affordable housing is provided at a lower rate than usually expected, in recognition of the many other community benefits the scheme will bring..
